The answer depends on the desired inn and dates.
There are lodgings ALL YEAR are complete so YES !!must be booked. These inns are ASALEM, TAGINAGI, MANACA, ANCORADOURO, CAICaRA and sometimes do Canto.
During the low season it is easier to find accommodation without reservation, bargain price (not at the above). It is also about the date, IN JANUARY, FEBRUARY is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to book at any inn previously. CARNIVAL, EASTER also, the island is filled in these dates. If not booked you ends paying for expensive stancy in places that are usually cheap or are empty

How will visit different beaches on the Ilha Grande?
On the island there are no cars, no roads, no buses, no taxis, or everything goes or WALKING or by BOATS.
The beaches you can visitn form Abraao (the main town) walking tour are: Praia Preta, Do Canto, Da Julia, Praia da Crena and Abraozinho. All these are close and no offer difficulty. Walking can also go to Lopes Mendes beach and Dois Rios beach but both require regular or good physical condition, not for easy for the elderly or children less 7.
Somewhat farther and is relatively easy Praia da Feiticeira and Feiticeira waterfall and with more time and storng condition can be reached at Praia do Rio Perequé (Pereque River Beach) and Boca do Ceu Beach and native sea food resto bars. Any other more distant beach camping require to return the next day.
The beaches of Saco do Ceu, Laguna Azul, Laguna Verde, Funil, Santana, Aracatiba, Sitio Forte are accessed by boat, there are also daily boats to Palmas, Pouso and Lopes Mendes. For Get to the amazing Dois Rios Beach also has a boat but only if the wind and wave conditions permitting, otherwise ONLY ON FOOT
The beaches of Aventureiro, Longa, and other like Proveta's in the south side are accessed after 3 days' walk from Abraao or hiring a private speedboat. Or go to Angra dos Reis, pay for private excursion and return to Abraao (need much time and $$). Beach Parnaioca just in private boar or 2 days walking, like those Sul and Leste Reservation. I think I did not forget or at least none of the important and best known for their beauty. In high season some time it´s possible rent a big speedboat share with others and made a TURN AROUND ISLAND TRIP, with this you see all beaches, but all day required, you see all but enjoys none.
If you are going to navigate around the island, make sure the boat is enabled, the crew is properly qualified and if the boat has 2 engines. Navigation is open water areas need more than only 1 engine, is a council of a captain yacht man.

Is there any nightlife on the island?
There is some nightlife in summer. For the rest of the year it is more quiet but there are bars with good beer (cerveija), open from 8pm to 1am approx.
We normally have live music for local people (samba, pagode, forro, typical music) to attract all kind of people like foreigners, local people and brazilian tourists, which is held in front of Church Square.
Lots of tourists visit the island which like to enjoy the beach and the moon at night while playing guitars and watching the fire.... a really nice place to fall in love ;o)
Once in a month the Aquarios Albergue, a backpackers hostel, organises a rave with DJ Taz (Juninho, a local, funny boy)

How is the security? there is theft or violence in Ilha Grande?
Ilha Grande is a quiet place, one can walk at any hour through the streets without feeling threatened, is a small town in the interior of a large country, should be equal throughout the world, one thing is the big city and another inside. It is hard to see an episode of violence, maybe some night any discussion of who spent some alcohol but not beyond that this.
